Best CHEAP ICS tablet so far
I own this tablet for 2 months already and I must say that this is one awesome sweet cheap 7 inch tab.
For people who said that the tablet is bad, very slow, no android market, a lot of chinese crap inside, make sure you do some research first. Dont jump into conclusion it was a bad tablet.
I must confess that this tablet are not very good out of the box because of the stock OS. After a few mods and upgrades done to the OS, this tablet is far more awesome than other high end tablets. Look for forums and blogs about the Novo Elf and you will find instructions on how to mod and upgrade the OS. After the mods and upgrades you will get a working market, google apps, flash and so on. Doesnt need a tech savvy person to figure it out.
My opinion about Novo 7 Elf
Pros:
1. Cheap
2. Powerful device for its price. Can handle a lot of 3D/HD games and apps smoothly.
3. Standard mini HDMI port, so you can use any mini HDMi cable(you get 1 in the box but the cable is rather short)
4. Good battery life
5. You can connect a USB mouse, USB pc keyboard and a USB hardisk(yes, hardisk, no just pendrives) to this tablet. And you can connect all the 3 with a hub. Yea all 3 and once.
Cons:
1. Doesnt have a full OS support from manufacturer(Ainol). You have to rely on hackers and independent developers for mod and upgrades to make the tablet works perfect.
2. Feel plasticly cheap(what do you expect on $150 tab?). But the built quality is acceptable for its price.
3. No accessory. Theres no case, protector what so ever for this tab yet. and you have to custom cut the screen protector for it.
4. The screen is easily scratched. Make sure you install a screen protector
Overall its a good bargain if you want a cheap tablet. You can choose Aurora for a better IPS screen but the screen consume a lot of power so the battery life will be lesser than Elf. An excellent buy I must say. You will never regret it
Best Android tablet 2012 so far
I have purchased and used the following tablets for myself, my woman and our kids:
* Amazon Fire - $50 more and slower
* Nook Color - 2x (Favorite for the kids)
* Acer Iconia A100 7 - Returned after 2 days; horrible battery life just reading books: 3 1/2 hours max.
* HTC Flyer WiFi - *awesome* tablet. For $300, it's a compelling choice. Well worth it over the Nook Color/Amazon Fire.
* Archos 80 G9 - Returned after 2 days. Bulky, horrible screen design flaw, bad battery life (~4 hrs) and keyboard was so laggy it was unusable.
I say all this because I *know* 7" tablets. And my Ainol NOVO 7 ELF is my favorite, hands down. You can't go wrong with this device and its only real competitor in the 7" space is the HTC Flyer, which isn't nearly as fast, and runs Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) vs the NOVO 7 ELF 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).
EDITED: Corrected HTC Flyer's android version number from 2.2 to 2.3.
Problems With The Acore Processor
The Elf is a thin and lightweight(12 oz)Chinese tablet with a nice feel to it. For the most part I'm glad I bought it.It plays music, vob movies and opens text files in a very simple format.
The downside to the Elf running Android 4.01 is the lack of a pdf reader and access to the Android Market but the main issue I'm having is the the sudden appearance of the warning message that says: "Unfortunately, the process android.process.acore has stopped." which seems to be triggered by intense online activity.
If this happens to you and the apps quit working, go to Settings->Apps->All Apps and find the "Google Services Framework". Click "Force Stop" and then click "Clear Data", then reboot your device.
If this doesn't end the problem you may have to reset the factory settings. Press the "menu" button on the left side of the top middle button and choose "system settings" at the bottom right corner of the screen. Once inside the settings menu scroll down to "backup and Reset" and open to "factory data reset." Be forewarned that everything will revert back to Chinese when you reboot!
To restore the Elf to your language you have to again hit the Menu button on your tablet, which will pop-up a little window in the bottom right corner of the screen with 3 Chinese words. Click the bottom Chinese word and this will go into settings. In settings, scroll down on the left side until you see a little lock icon, below the lock icon is an icon with the letter "A" in it. Click this icon. Then on the right side click the first Chinese word at the top. Then choose your language.
This has already happened to me twice.
I understand that this is a new, exciting and inexpensive tablet with a few bugs in its operating system. Just be warned ahead of time before you buy.
Pretty good for the price i paid.
First off this is my first Tablet (although i have played around with all the ones available in the states) and for the price i paid i am very happy.
Build Quality 9/10- better then expected. a few creeks but that's all, feels much more expensive then it is and the plastic feels pricey in hand
hardware 9/10 - has a micro USB (that can host((plug in a thumb drive)) and charge) micro SD up to 16gb (tested up to 4gb)3.5mm headphone jack, works great. charging port. complaints here are that the charging port and headphone jack look exactly the same and is really easy to plug one thing in to the wrong port. (also wish there was a full USB port)
Screen 10/10 - major factor here it has the same resolution as the big players 7"ers out there (samsung, acer) its very reactive to touch(only thing holding it back is the launcher more on that later)
UI 5/10 stock 10/10 later its android 4.0 - out of the box this unit lags way more then is tolerable, search youtube for ainol elf and you'll see videos showing this. this is mostly to blame on the launcher. to fix this is easy enough, download Nova launcher (Google Nova launcher xda) with this there is next to no lag at all which is amazing.
Battery life - the only "test" that i have done is daily use where screen was set to minimum and sound less then 50% at the end of the day i was at 38% left i had used it with the screen on for around 6 hours half of which was with wifi on. (the only difference you might see is that i was under clocked to 600mhz where as stock it comes at 1008 mhz.
Speakers 5/10 - compared to my laptops its terrible. compared to my phone its alright. its loud but not amazing.
hers an easy spec list.
Allwinner A10 (many core cortex A8 clocked at 1.2 ghz)
1 gig of DDR3 RAM (670mb available)
5gb of usable internal storage
5 point touch 1025x600
1 speaker (no stereo)
in comparison to the kindle fire its at least on par if not a little better. it has a micro sd slot so it can have more then the fires 8gb, 1 gig of ram to the fires 512mb and it comes stock with vanilla android 4.0, unlike the fire that comes with a modified android 2.3. It's good to buy from uPlay tablet, because they are partner of Ainol, and provide US customer service and returns.
Great Value Device
As is often written I was not expecting a $600 Ipad for less than $150.
What I got:
My first challenge was it started up in Chinese character. The ainol website gives instructions on how to change the language under FAQ. Pay close attention to the pictures.
Update: I just learned uPlay will ship English version of ELF from now on.
Where am I now:
I own an Ipod touch 4th gen. I wanted a larger screen. I got a larger screen and the multi-touch function is similar to the Ipod touch. After three days I have found and been able to install most of the functions (apps) I had on the Ipod, some from Amazon some from other websites. I am not a power user so I am sure there are things people would like to do that this device won't do, but so far I think I found an excellent value.
So far the only way I have found to control the volume is in the settings menu. I will probably just buy a set of earbuds with volume control in the cord.
